Wind Works Long Island Applauds Governor Cuomo and State Agencies for Moving South Fork Wind Forward with Signing of Joint Proposal
NEW YORK, October 8, 2020–Wind Works Long Island, representing a broad and diverse group of environmental, labor and community advocacy organizations, today applauded Governor Cuomo and State Agencies for moving South Fork Wind forward with the signing of the Joint Proposal.
“New York has the nation’s largest offshore wind commitment of 9,000 megawatts. Thanks to the leadership of Governor Cuomo and the hard work of multiple state agencies, the signing of the Joint Proposal to move South Fork Wind forward represents another important step toward putting New York on the path to meet its ambitious clean energy goals, support significant job creation, and create a more resilient fossil fuel free future.
"As groups representing the local community, environmental advocates, labor and the business community, we know that the fight against climate change cannot be won without offshore wind power. We appreciate the collaborative approach the state has taken to work with us in advancing this important project as a shining example of the type of renewable energy development that can effectively fight climate change, power tens of thousands of homes and businesses and give New York a strong foothold to transition into a clean energy economy.
"The progress on South Fork bodes well for the advancement of future offshore wind projects like Sunrise Wind and Empire Wind, which have the ability to power 1.5 million homes and become the centerpiece for the most comprehensive wind power program in the country.”
